My uncle Terry's health took a turn for the worst starting in January, in the Spring he relocated to the Salt Lake valley, first to the veterans hospital and then in a couple other care facilities. So in the last 4 months or so I've spoken with him probably more then in the rest of my life combined. I happened to be there when has passed away in hospice on Saturday, I was releaving other family members who had been sitting watch far longer then I. Seeing someone you've known your whole life die, even when it is a relatively peacefull passing and you know it is was their time, well its still a yuk experience and very unsettling.
Still getting to know Terry in the last months of his life and being there at his passing was the most meaningful experience I've had in a long time. Terry and my dad were less then two years apart in age and thusly had been close when they were younger. I suspect that had he been alive my Dad would likely have been with him when he passed, and having in effect filled in for him made me feel closer to my Dad then I have since he died. I think he'd have been proud that I was there, in a small way, for his older brother, and it filled me with a love for both men that I won't soon forget.
